Turning a Complex 3D Design into a Production-Ready Ceramic Sculpture

Developed for a European hotel decoration design team, this 45cm custom ceramic sculpture was brought from their 3D design drawing to production, featuring dense hand-applied pointed texture, dual surface finishes and a metallic effect — with mold development, sampling and production refinement for stable mass manufacturing.

01 — Complex Pointed Texture

High-Density Hand-Applied Pointed Surface

One side of the sculpture features a high-density pointed texture, with each decorative spike individually applied by hand to the ceramic surface.

The spikes are closely arranged. Especially around corners and curved areas, a brush is required to clean the small spaces between the spikes one by one.

At the same time, the dense pointed structure also presents a technical challenge during glazing, requiring careful coverage of both the raised and recessed areas.

The challenge:
High-density pointed texture → Hand application → Difficult glazing between the spikes → Higher surface finishing requirements.

02 — Dual Surface Finishes

Gloss and Matte on One Piece

The design required two contrasting surface finishes on the same sculpture: a glossy surface and a matte surface.

Controlling glaze application between the two areas was critical. The pointed textured section made this particularly challenging, as the raised spikes and recessed areas required precise handling to achieve a clean transition and consistent surface finish.

The challenge:
One sculpture → two different finishes → precise glaze control → clean transition around the textured area.

03 — Metallic Effect & Multiple Color Finishes

Vacuum Ion Plating for Different Metallic Finishes

To achieve the client’s original requirement for a metallic finish, we applied vacuum ion plating to the raised spike texture.

During later development, the client requested additional color effects. Using the same plating process, we developed gold, silver, and multicolor finishes. Because the plating was concentrated on the raised spikes, the surface texture, ceramic glaze, and localized plating had to be carefully coordinated to achieve the intended visual effect.

The challenge:
Localized plating on pointed areas → Multiple metallic finishes → Different colors within the same batch → Coordination between glaze and plating.

04 — Structural Balance & Production Adjustment

Correcting the Forward Tilt

Because the densely textured side added extra weight, the original structure tended to lean forward.

We addressed this by increasing the thickness of the base and adjusting the 3D design accordingly. The mold was then refined based on the revised structure, allowing the final sculpture to maintain the intended appearance while achieving better stability for production.

The challenge:
Additional weight from the pointed texture → Forward tilt → 3D structural adjustment → Mold refinement and stable production

The Results

Through 3D design adjustment, mold development, sampling and production refinement, we successfully translated the client’s original 3D design into the intended structural form, while meeting the requested surface requirements for pointed texture, gloss and matte finishes, and metallic effects.

During the later development stage, the client introduced additional color requirements. Based on the existing plating process, we developed gold, silver and iridescent finishes, allowing different colors to be combined within the same production batch according to project requirements.

The final design was successfully brought from 3D structural model to a finished ceramic product with multiple surface finishes, ready for stable mass production.
