According to UNCTAD, the global plastic trade volume in 2021 is close to 370 million tons, enough to fill more than 18 million trucks, which can be lined up to circle the Earth 13 times. Since less than 10 percent of all plastic produced is recycled, most of the product on these trucks will end up littering the streets and drowning the oceans.

UNCTAD emphasized that nature is in fact rich in sustainable materials such as bamboo, sand, plantains and algae. These materials can be used to make more environmentally friendly alternatives to straws, shopping bags, bottles, food packaging and other plastic products that people consume every day.
